Students with disabilities can get a two-year certificate in the medical field at a Missouri state university without taking remedial courses.

Under a new program approved by Drew University Medical School, students in remedial courses at the Missouri state school can work toward a certificate in the medical field without taking remedial courses at the school.

That program has been in place for the past 15 years in the Missouri state medical school, said Dr. Robert J. Sexton, dean of Drew’s School of Medicine.

In the years to come, the program will be expanded to allow students with less than a year of experience to work toward certificates in the medical field, he said.

“We want to make sure that our students are prepared to take those two years and to be certified,” he said. “There are a lot of opportunities in this world and you have to be prepared.”
